Mamye J. Newsome Obituary (1927 - 2013)

NEWSOME, Mamye Juanita - age 86 passed away on Monday, November 25, 2013 at 9:08 pm. She was living at Quality Care Nursing Center. She had suffered her third stroke in 8 years the Sunday before then.Funeral services for Mrs. Newsome will be at 11 am on Saturday, November 30, 2013 in the Partlow Funeral Chapel with visitation on Friday, November 29th from 2 pm to 5 pm and again on Saturday one hour prior to the service. Rev. Terry Bear will officiate and interment will follow in the Cedar Grove Cemetery.She was preceded in death by her husband Leonard Newsome, Jr (age-82 in 2007), her 3 sons: Leonard (Steve) Newsome (age 58 in 2006), James (Stanley) Newsome (age 44 in 1994), Eddie Wayne Newsome (age 44 in 2000), her mother Bonnie Lorene Armistead (age 92 in 2002), her father Ralph Armistead (age 82 in 1989), and 3 brothers: Ralph (Buddy) Armistead, Jr, Harold Armistead, & Kenneth Armistead. She leaves her 4 grandchildren: Toby, Todd (Jennifer), Travis, & Holly Newsome, daughter-in-law, Gail Newsome; 2 great-grandchildren, Sophie & Zander Newsome; and 2 sisters-in-law: Madeline Armistead and Mairene Armistead.Pallbearers will be Johnny Wolf, Justin Armistead, Robert Langford, Jamie Armistead, Jason Gibson, Joe Jakalski. Mamye was born in Nashville on March 3rd, 1927 but lived the majority of her life in Lebanon. She was married a day before her 20th birthday on March 2nd, 1947. She met her future husband (from Ashboro,NC) at a fair where he was showing off his expertise at the sledgehammer/mallet game, the "High Striker" since the army during World War II had military exercises in Lebanon. She had briefly owned the Market Basket convenience store on Hwy 70 near the by-pass for a couple of years in the early 70's. She also was a weekend waitress and dessert maker at the Southland Restaurant on 231 South for a year in the early 70's when her son Stanley briefly owned the restaurant. She worked at the State of Tennessee for about 30 years and retired from there in 1987 to help take care of her elderly father.She was extremely proud of her middle son Stanley Newsome who had become the youngest police chief at the time for Lebanon for a year or two in the early 70's. She kept any articles about him and pictures of him that appeared in the Lebanon Democrat and Wilson World at that time.She loved to cook, especially Sunday lunches and for the holidays. The family would eat at her house every Sunday and each one was like a Holiday meal in itself. For holidays, she always insisted having them at her house and would have about 30 or more people there each time. She lived in the same house for 55 years until she got too old to live by herself. The house was built in 1940 on Cairo Bend Road and when she first saw it as a teenager, it appeared as a mansion back then in the middle of farm land. She thought that she would always want to live there, and in 1956, she got it when it came up for auction and her father bought all of the 100+ acres behind it which is now the LakeWood Downs subdivision. In fact, many of her family members had houses built along a 3/4 mile strip of that road. Mamye and Leonard had originally tried making money from the land by selling eggs and having livestock (like pigs and cows) but didn't make much money at it so settled for just gardening for vegetables to use in her grand meals.She also liked to collect and showcase antiques. She liked to collect many different groups of items. She had over 300 different types of dolls and figurines and all types of furniture and china. She also had many types of paintings and cameras. She liked to showcase her collections throughout her house to the interest of guests. She will be greatly missed.
